Marcus Price x Bait - AM97 Recreational High
The phenomena known as Runners High suggests that the sport can also be a spiritual experience for runners who can push beyond the limit.
"While there's no one profound definition of what exactly is a Runner's High, that hasn't stopped a number of avid runners from trying to relate their experiences with it. They've described it as everything from a "mental state of relaxation," and "a second wind," to a "MYTHICAL POINT WHERE THE MIND AND BODY SEPARATE."
While running provides the best form of exercise for the body, the phenomena known as Runners High suggests that the sport can also be a spiritual experience for runners who can push beyond the limit.
"a feeling of euphoria that is experienced by some individuals engaged in strenuous running, and that is held to be associated with the release of endorphins by the brain."
It is also suggested by many that endorphins are some of the many chemicals that contribute to runner's high, other candidates include epinephrine, serotonin and dopamine.
Two 2004 studies, one from UC Irvine and another done by the Georgia Institute of Technology, found that runner's high is caused, not by endorphins, but by anandamide which is a natural chemical that stimulates the brain in the same way that THC does. This THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is the active ingredient in cannabis.
"I got runner's high once years ago. Well into a run I all of a sudden felt detached and like I was floating and felt very relaxed and happy, felt like I was on a drug and it lasted for the rest of my run. I wish I knew how to achieve it again, feels amazing."
"Some may ask why I am running such long distances. There are reasons. During the ultras I come to a point where my body is almost dead. My mind has to take leadership. When it is very hard there is a war going on between the body and the mind. If my body wins, I will have to give up; if my mind wins, I will continue. At that time I feel that I stay outside of my body. It is as if I see my body in front of me, my mind commands and my body follows. This is a very special feeling, which I like very much. It is a very beautiful feeling and the only time I experience my personality separate from my body, as two different things." - Yiannis Kouros
This project explores challenging the function of the shoe in two different ways. I received the AirMax 97 - a running shoe.
I was fascinated by the extreme runners who pushed the sport and themselves to the limits, and during the process of this, elevated themselves to another place. The function of the shoe changes - it moves beyond sportswear the shoe becomes something that is capable of teleporting the runner to another plain or place and an altered state of mind.
Every runners nirvana is different, I wanted to represent runners nirvana in an abstract way, from the athletes point of view.
Firstly I studied every part of the shoe closely, and then created a palette using every shape I could see within the shoe and it's materials. The function of the shoe has been changed again - the running shoe has become a medium to illustrate and express the runners' nirvana and euphoric OBE experiences.
After the explorations and artworks created within this idea, I collaborated with Bait to produce this animation.
