James Dawe - The Air Bubble

The sports shoes become more comfortable and molded to that individual as they grow using them.

Using sport as inspiration, I was considering how people/athletes have a favourite pair of shoes to train and run in and the expression that someone 'lives in that pair of shoes' sprung to mind. The sports shoes become more comfortable and molded to that individual as they grow using them, making that person very reluctant to change. I saw similarities to an actual home/ habitat, which is where my conclusive idea comes from. The new function of the shoes should be a home/shelter to an alternative yet very suitable resident, a hermit crab.

For the look of the shoes I started brainstorming around the word 'bubble', which brought me to think about bubble gum and how this can be annoyingly collected on the sole of a new pair of trainers. I began intentionally collecting, adorning and sticking spat out bubble gum onto the upper of one of the shoes. This created a strange camouflage and customisation and the shoe began to resemble something grungy that had been thrown to the depths of a canal and grown a strange mould on it's outer shell, perfect for my hermit crab.
